Independent & Integrated Tasks In The TOEFL Speaking Section

Q:  What Are “Independent Tasks”?

A:  The tasks which are referred to as “Independent”, are only called such because there will be a question which asks for the test-taker to give information which is not given in a written text or in a audio recording.  The term “Independent” is a bit mis-leading though, as the test-taker will still have to read the question, and listen to the audio.  However, the audio will simply be repeating the text that they have read.

Ultimately, the reason for calling them “Independent” is that the test-taker will have to come up with the information to speak about on his or her own, rather than simply reporting on information that is given, such as in the “Integrated Tasks”.  And even though Task 2 of The TOEFL Speaking Section, does actually give specific information to speak about, it is called “Independent” because the test-taker is asked for his or her opinion on a subject.

Q:  What Are “Integrated Tasks”?

A:  The Integrated Tasks in the TOEFL Speaking Section, require a person to use different English language skills.  For example, the test-taker will read a text, then listen to a recording, and then he or she will will have to integrate the information from both sources in order to complete the task.


Independent & Integrated Tasks In The TOEFL Writing Section

Q:  What Is The “Independent Task”?

A:  Just as in The Speaking Section, the task which is referred to as “Independent”, is only called such because there will be a question which asks for the test-taker to state and support an opinion.  So even though the subject matter that is to be written about, it is considered “Independent” because it requires an “opinion”.  The format of the task, and how to best answer it is exactly the same a Speaking Section – Task 2.  The only difference is that you will write your answer, and you will have far more time to formulate your ideas into more complete sentences and paragraphs.

Q:  What Is “Integrated Task”?

A:  Just as with The Speaking SectionThe Integrated Task in the TOEFL Writing Section, requires a person to use different English language skills.  The test-taker will read a text, then listen to a recording.  Then he or she will will have to integrate the information from both sources in order to complete the task.  This task, (and how to fulfill it) is formulated exactly the same as Speaking Task 4, only the response will be longer, and will, obviously, be in the written form.

TEST-TAKER ISSUES #2 – FAULTY EQUIPMENT – Update!

So I heard back from ETS about the issue of faulty equipment, but unfortunately (however, not surprisingly) they did not answer my questions, but seemed to merely copy information from a FAQ page (not mine) about issues which were not related to my questions at all.

Below is the “conversation”…


My Message To Them…

Greetings,

I am writing today because I am an English teacher who helps people prepare for the TOEFL exam, and I recently had one person contact me saying that she was told that she needs to take the exam over again, because there was a problem with the microphone and so the speaking section answers could not be heard.

Can you please tell me what the proper course of action would be in this situation?

It seems that the testing center should be liable for giving that test-taker another exam and that they should pay for the registration, as well. However, this is not the first time that I have heard about problems with the equipment in the testing centers.

Is there a way to report those testing centers and to ensure that they do indeed compensate the test-taker with paying for that person to take the exam again.

Also, is there a service that they can use to report such problems?

Regarding your inquiry:

What if my test is rescheduled or if there is a problem at the test center?

If your test administration is canceled before you test, or your test cannot be scored or your scores are canceled due to a testing irregularity, you can select a different test date and you will not be charged the rescheduling fee.

If you arrive at the test center and find out that the test administration has been canceled by ETS, you can reschedule your test at no charge or receive a full refund of your test fee.

If you take the test and your scores are canceled by ETS, ETS will determine, at its sole discretion, whether or not you are eligible to re-test at no charge or to receive a refund.

If ETS cancels a test administration or cancels scores after you test, and you have incurred travel costs to get to the test center, you may be eligible for a refund of reasonable and documented travel expenses for yourself only within 30 days of your original test date. Refunds are in U.S. dollars. For more information on reimbursement, see Testing Policies.

If I experience technical problems at the test center, can I ask that my test be rescheduled?

In rare instances, technical problems may require late starts and/or rescheduling of the test. If such an event at the test center makes it necessary for you to cancel your test session, or if it is later determined that your scores could not be reported, you can choose to take the test again for free or receive a full refund of the original test fee.

We hope this information is helpful.


 

As you can see, they did give some vaguely similar information because it did mention something about refunds and about faulty equipment, but did not answer my questions at all.  Especially considering that I specifically ask HOW a person can get help…  not IF they can get help.

In addition the the message seems to have been written by…  no one…  no name, no person, no help.

We’ll see what they say to the response I sent asking them, once again, to answer the questions that I asked rather than simply (and anonymously) pasting useless information with no explanation about how to actually use that information.

Test-Taker Issues #2 – Faulty Equipment

Faulty Equipment At The Testing Center

Howdy,

So for the last two-and-a-half days, I’ve been dealing with some rather frustrating technical difficulties which were caused by a third-party, but made it quite difficult for me to make any progress on The 3000 Most-Used Words in The English Language Guide, updating The TOEFL Testing Dates and Locations Pages, and a new project for The “TOEFL Free-For-ALL” – The Only TOEFL Vocabulary You Actually Need To Know.

So, a lot of stuff going on…  and then not being able to make any progress because of a problem which was not caused by me, is quite aggravating.

And this made me think about another issue that I have come across a few times since I’ve been helping people achieve Excellence on The TOEFL iBT Exam.  That problem being, faulty equipment at the testing center, causing test-takers to either not be able to hear the speaking parts due to noise in the room, poor headphones, or having their Speaking Section recordings completely messed up because of a bad microphone.


It is true that there is a chance to test the equipment at the beginning of the exam, before it actually starts, but that can not provide 100% assurance that the equipment will continue to function properly throughout the exam, or when everyone in the room is speaking at the same.


 

So, what to do?

Well, the first thing to do, is make sure that if you do not feel 100% confident that the equipment is working properly, raise your hand IMMEDIATELY and inform one of the people at the testing center…  it is, after-all, YOUR money that is being spent for this exam.

But…  What if your microphone fails and you don’t even know it; or if your headphones go out in the middle of the speaking part?

Or what it there is construction outside the window of the testing room and you can’t hear a damn thing?!?!

Well, for that, you will have to just wait for part two.  And this is not because I want to “leave you hanging’”, but because earlier today, I sent an email to the official organization that created and administers the exam, and we will have to see what kind of recourse a person can take in this situation.  I know that many people have complained about their support and customer service in the past, but let’s see if this is their moment to shine.


I will be back with more information about this as soon as I get it, and I’m planning on setting up a testing-center review board on the website, but I will need to actually have people talk to me about their experiences.
